Edmund Carpenter had been an anthropologist for decades when he met the woman who would become his third (and, by the way, final) wife, Houston’s own Adelaide de Menil, in 1969. The arts power couple would spend years gathering ancient ivory and wooden idols from the Old Bering Sea cultures of coastal Alaska and Siberia, made during the period spanning 250 BC to 1000 AD, a selection of which are now on view at the Menil Collection.
